What does kWh mean?

A kilowatt-hour measures the amount of energy used when a 1,000-watt appliance runs for one hour. Examples:

  • A 1,500-watt space heater running for two hours uses 3 kWh.
  • A refrigerator typically uses 400–600 kWh per year.
  • A clothes dryer can use 3–5 kWh per load.

Once you know your usage in kWh, multiply it by your electricity rate (listed on your bill) to estimate the cost.

Understanding Heating Measurements

Heating systems in U.S. homes vary widely—some use natural gas, others electricity, heating oil, or heat pumps. Each type has its own way of measuring energy use.

For natural gas heating

If your home uses gas for heating, your gas meter measures consumption in therms or cubic feet.

  • One therm equals about 100,000 British thermal units (BTUs).
  • Your gas bill usually converts cubic feet to therms for easier comparison.

To check your usage, record the meter reading periodically and subtract the previous number. Multiply the difference by your utility’s conversion factor to find therms used.

For electric heating

If you heat with electricity—through baseboard heaters, a heat pump, or an electric furnace—your electric meter already captures that usage in kWh. You can estimate how much of your total electricity goes to heating by comparing winter and summer usage.

For oil or propane heating

Oil and propane deliveries are measured in gallons. Your supplier’s delivery slips show how much fuel you’ve received. Tracking these numbers over time helps you understand your heating patterns and plan for future deliveries.

For heat pumps

Modern heat pumps often come with built-in monitoring systems or smart thermostats that show energy use and efficiency. These can display data in kWh and even estimate cost savings compared to other heating methods.

Track Your Usage Online

Most utilities now offer online dashboards or mobile apps where you can view your energy data hour by hour, day by day, or month by month. This makes it easier to spot patterns—like higher usage at night or sudden spikes in heating demand.
